Composition Is Not Rhetoric, Sharon Crowley and Goodbye
Wow! I think that this might be one of the most interesting pieces that we have read this semester! I think that I agree with her in part but it's interesting that all the rhetoric that we have read this semester has been in the form of a composition, even if the earliest ones from the Greek and Roman times were originally speeches. I also think that it's interesting that she is trying to "intervene in civic discourse, using
topics, genres, conventions, and figures taught in school by rhetoricians" and say that composition isn't rhetoric when she is clearly trying to lay down some rhetoric with this composition. I think if I were to rewrite this piece I would call it "Not All Composition is Rhetoric" because I get it, not every piece of composed writing is rhetorical, especially those written in lower classes because those students are just learning how to write, not to persuade. But I would argue that as we 'grow up' in our education I think that more and more of our writing becomes rhetorical.
What a fun and interesting class! Thank you everyone for contributing to discussions and making me think from new perspectives :) Good luck on all your future endeavors! Come visit me in the library if you're ever bored or need help finding a book! Have a great summer!
Cadence,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for all of your insightful comments throughout the semester. This class was incredibly interesting, and I enjoyed learning about both rhetoric and teaching strategies for young writers. I appreciate all your help this semester, and I hope you enjoy your Summer!
Cadence,
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you'll still be around! I'll probably use the physical library knowing I can seek out a friendly face to answer my dumb question. LOL!
(My comment didn't post on Tuesday! Poop! Oh well!)
I guess I have too many logins! This is Rachel, by the way! Sheesh!
